With the advances in modern medical technology, dentures have improved in their appearance and performance. Dentures are false teeth in a sense, designed to discreetly fill the gaps that are created when teeth are pulled out or fall out. But why exactly does this happen?

Gum disease
According to the Academy of General Dentistry gum disease is the cause of approximately 70% of adult tooth loss, and three out of four people will be affected by it at some point in their lives. Severe gum disease can lead to bone loss in the upper gum which ultimately cause teeth to fall out. If your teeth move around, gaps between your teeth become bigger or adult teeth are ?loose? this may mean you have gum disease. Bleeding or swollen gums are also signs of gum disease.

Tooth decay
Tooth decay attacks the nerves in the centre of your teeth. Severe tooth decay can cause excruciating pain and this may lead to the tooth being pulled out. Alternatively, tooth decay may attack the nerve so severely that it dies and the tooth rots and falls out by itself. Tooth decay is caused by not looking after your teeth or seeing a dentist regularly. Foods that are high in bacteria and carbohydrates feed the bacteria in your mouth which also adds to the likeliness of tooth decay.

Trauma or impact
Trauma may cause teeth to fall out. This means serious impact to the area, like if a child were to fall of their bike, trauma to the jaw may lead to some teeth falling out. Thus dentures would be needed not only to make the mouth more aesthetically pleasing but also so it can function correctly.

Clenching and grinding
Clenching and grinding of the teeth is common, as many people do so in their sleep. Sometimes such damage can be caused to the teeth in doing this that dentists will recommended the tooth be pulled out rather than try and fix it.

Once a tooth falls out it is gone forever. This may be aesthetically unappealing and it also may render the jaw unable to perform as usual. Dentures are a time tested and safe way to fix these issues. New technology has enabled dentists to produce dentures that perform as amazingly as they look.
